The engine is the heart of every car. However, its mode of operation is very different. In addition to combustion engines, cars with electric and hybrid engines also have a firm place on the car market today. They are not necessarily dependent on the supply of fossil fuel. However, the petrol engine and the diesel engine are still the most widespread. After all, around 90 percent of all German cars run on petrol or diesel fuel.

As a classic vehicle engine consists of around 1,200 to 1,400 individual parts, defects can hardly be avoided in the course of a car's life. Especially wear and tear can make it necessary to replace spark plugs, glow plugs, filters, V-belts or timing belts. Gasoline engine vs. diesel engine - where are the differences?


Both engine variants work with fossil fuel from which they extract mechanical energy through a series of explosions. What is different, however, is the way in which they do this:

Fuel combustion in gasoline engine:

  1. Fuel is mixed with air in the intake tract
  2. The piston compresses the mixture of air and gasoline
  3. The spark plug ignites the mixture - an explosion
  4. occurs
  5. The piston forces the exhaust gas through the exhaust valve

Fuel combustion in diesel engines

  1. The inlet valve allows air to flow in
  2. The piston moves up and compresses the air, causing it to heat up strongly
  3. The valve injects diesel at the right time - an explosion occurs
  4. The piston forces the exhaust gas through the exhaust valve

The diesel engine does not require spark plugs due to the different type of fuel combustion. Instead, it causes the fuel to explode due to the extremely strong compression. Higher compression means more efficient fuel combustion and lower fuel consumption at the same time.

Which parts belong to a combustion engine?


As already mentioned, a combustion engine consists of far more than 1,000 individual parts. Modern gasoline and diesel engines in particular are equipped with a great deal of technology and sensors that record and monitor every parameter of the engine. However, the basic components responsible for combustion are always the same:

  • The camshaft controls the flow of air and fuel into the intake and exhaust valves
  • The inlet valve allows fuel and / or air to flow into the cylinder
  • The piston attached to the crankshaft via the connecting rod compresses the air or the mixture
  • The oil pan under the flywheel mass of the crankshaft ensures constant lubrication
  • The exhaust valve allows the exhaust gas to enter the exhaust tract of the vehicle
  • The crankshaft converts the energy into a rotary motion

Other essential components of an engine are:

  • Injection system (injects fuel directly into the combustion chamber)
  • Cooler (reduces engine temperature during operation)
  • Air mass meter (provides the optimal air-fuel mixture)
  • Oil pump (lubricates the engine)
  • Belt and timing drive (drives the camshaft among other things)

  • Cylinder head (seals the combustion chamber at the top)

Frequent defects in the engine and how to fix them quickly
