The takeover of Opel by PSA has also reached the spare parts market
Since 01.08.2017, the car manufacturer Opel has been part of the French group PSA Peugeot Citroen. Already since 2012 there has been a cooperation between the PSA group and the American car group GM (General Motors), to which Opel belonged until the takeover. For these reasons, technology and components from PSA (Peugeot Citroen) have been increasingly used in Opel models since 2012.
Gradually, the Opel models are being converted to PSA-based. This conversion has already been done for the following models:
- Zafira Life
- Corsa F, Corsa-e
- Crossland X
- Combo Life (Combo E)
- Grandland X
- Mokka B (2020 vorgestellt)
Current models that still feature technology from General Motors (GM):
- Insignia B, Astra K, Ampera-e
What does this mean for original Opel spare parts?
Depending on the model and year of your vehicle, GM technology can still be used or PSA technology can already be used. For this reason, the packaging of the spare parts and the structure of the spare part numbers can also differ. The GM logo on the labels will gradually disappear and probably the packaging, labels and numbers of Opel and PSA will be standardized.
We would like to explain the changeover using an example, the Opel Crossland X. This was already developed in cooperation with PSA and has the Citroen C3 as its sister model. With these two models, an attempt was made to use as many common parts as possible (common parts strategy: assemblies or modules should not be used in only one product in order to save costs). Examples for such assemblies can be e.g. the brakes, the exhaust system or the tank. The two vehicle models from Citroen and Opel are therefore based on the same platform/base.
An example of an identical spare part for the Opel Crossland X is the rear brake pad set. The previous original number for the rear brake pad set for the Opel Crossland X with a brake disc diameter of 249mm was 3649110. This number has now been changed to 1617190980. The brake pad set has also received a new packaging, as shown in the left picture.
What do the original parts for Opel look like now?
With the takeover of Opel by the PSA group, more and more original Opel spare parts will be provided with a uniform PSA number in the future. Labels and packaging will probably also be aligned. This is a process that will not be completed overnight. Therefore, in the future we will be confronted with different designs of labels, number ranges and packaging. Original parts for your Opel can be available either in the white packaging with "old" Opel number and Opel, Vauxhall (and GM) logo or already in one of the "new" packaging with PSA number and logo. In terms of content, the same spare part is included.
